Rebre’s Most Anticipated Movies of 2018

**EDIT: I’ve added the trailers for a couple of movies, enjoy! Also, this article was the topic of the pilot episode of Discussing Comics! Check it out right here!

2017 had some of the most divisive movies in recent memory, but overall, with hits like Logan, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Wonder Woman, Spider-man Homecoming, Thor Ragnarok, and Star Wars the Last Jedi, “geek” movies ruled the theaters. Looking at the 2018 release calendar, geeks will have plenty from which to choose. Here’s a rundown of Rebre’s most anticipated movies of 2018!

Black Panther – 2/16/2018
The year kicks off in February with the release of Marvel’s latest effort, Black Panther. Coming off a great year, Marvel continues with its high-risk superhero campaign. With a bold African American cast and a proven pedigree, Black Panther is poised to explode! This is also the last Marvel movie before the movie event of the year, Infinity War.

Ready Player One – 3/30/2018
Based on the popular book of the same name, Ready Player One is a movie many in the Geek/Nerd culture have been waiting on for quite a while. The trailer wasn’t too well received, but it is directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg, so we can’t quite count it out quite yet. Then again, when was the last classic Spielberg movie released, like 2002? We’ll see.

The New Mutants – 4/13/2018
EDIT New Mutants has been pushed to 2019. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not, but we have an extra 10 months to overly criticize this seemingly ill-advised film.
When it was announced that The New Mutants would be a horror movie, rather than your standard X-men fare, fans were justifiably worried. What exactly makes this a New Mutants movie? Is it the same characters from the comics and how do their powers translate to a horror film? The concept seems messy, and the trailer only made the idea messier. Mark our anticipation for this one as more of a morbid curiosity.

Avengers: Infinity War – 4/27/2018
Infinity War is 2018’s show stopper. Everything Marvel Studios has done so far has been building up to this movie and the gravity of the event can be seen in the trailer. Finally seeing characters like Starlord, Spider-man, Dr. Strange, and Thor sharing a screen, fighting the enemy they’ve been teasing all along, is cinema history waiting to happen.

Solo: A Star Wars Story – 5/25/2018
With the Last Jedi still in theaters, it’s hard to believe that Solo: A Star Wars Story is only 5 months away. We’ve become so accustomed to Star Wars films hitting us in December, that the wait for Solo seems truncated. The intrigue following this Star Wars spin-off really exploded when Lucas Film and directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller parted ways in the midst of filming. That’s definitely not a good sign, but the scuttlebutt around the project was that they were trying to make a comedy more in line with their previous movies (21 Jump Street, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie) and I just don’t see how that lines up in the Star Wars universe.

Deadpool 2 – 6/1/2018
The surprise hit of 2016 was Deadpool. It reignited the career of Ryan Reynolds, injected life into the stagnant X-men franchise and redefined what a comic book movie could be. Can that energy be captured again? Its got a new director, but the same stars and writers, so this is really their movie to ruin. With that said, all nerds will be in line June 1st to see Deadpool’s new antics unfold.

The Incredibles 2 – 6/15/2018
It has been 14 years since Pixar’s timeless take on superheroes was released. Fans of the Incredibles have been waiting impatiently since the announcement of the sequel in 2014. Pixar rarely strikes out and with Brad Bird at the helm, there’s no way this isn’t at least decent.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – 6/22/2018
Jurassic World was a huge hit for Universal, but there’s no guarantee that its follow up will be nearly as big. Just look at the fall off from Jurrasic Park to The Lost World. Unlike the Lost World, the core cast is returning for Fallen Kingdom, but with a weak debut trailer, it may not be too early to call Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom a flop waiting to happen.

Ant-Man and the Wasp – 7/6/2018
Marvel’s third movie this year comes on the heels of the monster Infinity War. Two months after the previous movie is a weird place to have a comedy about Ant-Man, especially if Infinity War is the beginning of a two-parter. Regardless, the warm positive vibes that radiated off Ant-Man the first time around, should be intact for the sequel. Very little is known about the story, and despite being a big budget Marvel film it seems to be flying under the radar (pun intended).

Venom – 10/5/2018
This Venom movie was one of those movies I thought was never going to be made. Why would anyone want a Venom movie without Spider-Man? Sure Tom Hardy is a good choice, but if it’s not in the MCU, then why bother. So many doubts surround this film that I almost want to root for it. You know, like when you here an idea that is so bad, you have to see the outcome, except I kinda what this to work out.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix – 11/2/2018
The X-men Franchise has been dragged through the mud for nearly 2 decades. With the Disney/Fox buyout, it looks like the train may be close to getting back on the tracks, but not before Dark Phoenix hits theaters in November. It feels like a poorly timed retread of a story we’ve already seen on film. Maybe it will go interesting places, who knows? However, again, the interest here is of the train wreck variety.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse – 12/14/2018
This is secretly my most anticipated movie of the year. I love Spider-man, I love Mile Morales and I love Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and after seeing the teaser (below) I LOVE the art style. I don’t know if the world needs an animated Spider-man movie, but with these stars aligning, I think it could be something really special.

Aquaman – 12/21/2018
As unnecessary as Aquaman was in Justice League, Jason Momoa’s portrayal of The King of the Seven Seas was noteworthy. Giving him his own movie is a great idea. With this one being nearly a year away, very little is known about it, but presumably, it will pick up where Justice League left off, for better or worse.
