The Wii console sales maybe sagging, but the quality of games has never been better. Here are the big ones, the Techpedition Approved Games for Wii of 2010.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 – We kick thing off with everyone’s favorite part-time plumber/full-time princess retriever. Mario is back with another galaxy hoping adventure. Galaxy 2 is the next in a long running line of 3D Mario platformers, and it does not disappoint. Galaxy 2 may only be an incremental improvement to its predecessor, but gravity puzzles have never been more fun. This is truly the pinnacle of 3D plaforming as we know it and oh, did I mention you get to ride Yoshi? As one of the highest reviewed Mario games currently available, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a must for the holiday season.
Donkey Kong Country Returns – The ape named Donkey hasn’t had a proper game in a long time. Now that I think about it, 2005 is when the last proper adventure was released, and that was a Bongo game (In fact, I think Carl was the only person that enjoyed it). Anywho…Retro, the team behind the hugely popular and well received Metroid Prime Series, has put together the 5th game in the Donkey Kong Country canon and its lives up to its namesake. Donkey and Diddy Kong revisit their 2D platforming roots in this highly anticipated and much awaited game.
Goldeneye 007 – On paper this game looks like a terrible idea. It looks like a cheap way to cash in on Classic Goldeneye nostalgia. Actually, Electronic Arts tried this exact tactic in 2004 and did not succeed with Goldeneye Rogue Agent. The difference here is that Goldeneye 007 is good, really good. This completely reworked Goldeneye game is still based on the movie of the same name, but stars Daniel Craig as 007 and the tone has been altered to fit the new rough and tumble style of Bond movies. Kirby’s Epic Yarn – Yeah I know Kirby is “lame” and pretty kiddy, but even the macho-ist of men can appreciate cute. Kirby Epic Yarn’s cute cup runneth over. The surprisingly highly rated title Kirby’s Epic Yard is another Nintendo published platformer for the Wii. Unlike the aforementioned Donkey Kong Country Returns, which is an action platformer, Kirby’s latest game takes a more exploratory approach. With the entire word being made of yard, you’ll find hundreds if not thousands of hidden strings to pull. Also, Kirby can’t die so Epic Yarn is fun for the whole family.
Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary Edition – Sure these games are 20 years old and aren’t the proper NES classics that everyone grew to love, but remember when Super Mario All-stars originally came out and it blew your mind? All your favorite games looked so much cooler and The Lost Levels was impossible to finish. Well this is that game. All-stars may not have the nostalgic appeal that the original games had, but its a great collection. Individually the original games will cost you $21 dollars on the Virtual Console, but the history book and soundtrack make it well worth the extra $9.
